QUOTES!

    REFLECTIONS!

"First of all, if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view and until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
-Atticus
(pg. 39)
This is SO powerful. This quote is definitely one of my favorites. This shows that Atticus knows how to understand people. That sometimes judging them isnt right. You have to know where they come from in order to understand them and their situation. Take a look at what it's like to be that person.
"Dill if you don't hush, I'll knock you bowlegged. I mean it now."
-Scout
(pg.48)
This quote might not be full of wisdom, but it was definitely full of humor. I laughed atleast for a full 5 minutes at this line. For a seven year old to threaten to "knock somebody bowlegged," is pretty ironic, and humorous.
"Atticus told me to delete the adjectives and I'd have the facts."
-Scout
(pg.79)
This quote was moving to me because I have heard it sometime before. I do not recall who had said it, but it definitely rang a bell and I remembered hearing it. Also, this applies to everybody. If you were to delete some  of the adjectives in some situations, you would get the facts. (:
"By then he did not have to tell me. Just as the birds know where to go when it rains, I know when there is trouble in our street."
-Scout
(pg. 92)
This shows me a tight knit community and it really connects with me because I grew up in a small town kind of like this book. I love this quote also because this tells you that the little girl is smarter than you think. She knows what is going on.
"We know all men are not created equal in the sense some people would have us believe- some people are smarter than others, some people have more opportunity because they're born with it, some men make more money than others, soem ladies make better cakes than others- some people are born gifted beyond the normal scope of most men."
-Atticus
(pg. 274)
This is impactful. This pretty much defines America. I agree... all men are NOT created equal. especially in this day and age. If the color of you skin is different or your ethnicity is unfamiliar, you arent treated equally. Sad, but thats how I see it :/
"The handful of people in this town who say that fair play is not marked White Only; the handful of people who say fair trial is for everybody, not just us; the handful of people with enough humility to think, when they look at a Negro, there but for the Lord's kindness am I."
-Miss Maudie
(pg. 316)
I LOVE Miss Maudie in this book. Her quotes always make me think. especially this one. She, in my opinion, is saying that the handful of people who think that fair play is marked white only and that fair tial isnt for everybody is not kind. Which is definitely true.
"Jem was the one who was getting more like a girl everyday, not I."
-Scout
(pg. 320)
This quote made me legitimately laugh out loud. Scout is wanting to squish the bug and Jem is on the defense saying " It didnt do anything to you..." She thinks that Jem is afraid of bugs and that she is more of a tomboy than Jem is.
"Funny thing, Atticus Finch might have got him off scot free, but wait-? Hell no. You know how they are. Easy come, easy go. Just shows you that Robinson boy was legally married, they day he kept himself clean, went to church and all that, but when it comes down to the line the veneer's mighty thin. Nigger always comes out in 'em"
-Scout
(pg. 322)
This excerpt is saying that a Negro in this generation didn't own anything. except that they are legally married, and that sooner or later, the "Negro" comes out in them. Meaning that the bad things always happen to come out at some point in their life.
"This was the first he had let us know he knew a lot more about something than we thought he knew. And it happpened years ago."
-Scout
(pg. 325)
This line shows that Scout doesnt have a lot of faith in her fathers knowledge and education. Her and Jem thought they knew more about the topic and Atticus piped in to let them know that he knew more. This really surprised me. I didnt think the kids thought that their father wdidnt know anything.
"...Sometimes I think I'm a total failure as a parent, but I'm all they've got. Before Jem looks at anyone else he loos at me, and I've tried to live so I can look squarely back at him... if I connived at something like this, frankly I couldn't meet his eye, and the day I can't do that I'll know I've lost him. I don't want to lose him and Scout, because they're all I've got."
-Atticus
(pg. 366)
I love all the Atticus lines like this. The ones full of wisdom and insight on how hes feeling. Atticus doesnt really let people know how hes feeling usually, but, in this quote, he really tells Heck Tate how he wants his kids to look up to him. I look up to my dad. He is SO inspiring to me. He is a lot like Atticus. Kind of a push over and he understands children and he really likes to connect with us on our level. I love him.
"Atticus was feeble: he was nearly fifty. When Jem and I asked him why he was so old, he said he got started late, which we felt reflected upon his abilities and manliness."
-Scout
(pg. 118)
Scout really makes Atticus feel inferior. He is an older father and I dont think they let him forget it. He was never one to play sports with them, but he was a great advice giver. I honestly think that some kids in this world don't recieve enough one on one time with their fathers.
Francis looked at me carefully, concluded that I had been
sufficiently subdued, and crooned softly, "Nigger-lover..."

This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth. My
left impaired, I sailed in with my right, but not for long. Uncle Jack
pinned my arms to my sides and said, "Stand still!"
-Scout
(pg. 112)
This scene in the book made me think of myself when I was a kid. I NEVER let anybody mess with me or my parents. When someone was to mess with my family when I was little I got really defenseive and there were many cases where someone would have a bloody nose. (that was my hitting spot. I dont know why.)
"That should appeal to your imagination. Just pretend you're inside the Radley house."
-Atticus
(pg. 140)

When Jem is complaining about facing the consequences about the event at Ms. Dubose's house, Atticus comes out with this amusing wise crack. It kind of made me giggle. I definitely could see someone saying this to me. I especially like it when he smiled before he even said something.
"You're damn tootin' they won't. Had you covered all the
time, Atticus."
-Mr. Underwood
(pg. 206)
Mr. Underwood is the closet-caregiver. He really sincerely cares about everybody, and has everybody's back. but everybody doesnt know that he really cares. One of my family members is like this. I really look up to this person. No matter the situation, You know that you will never be alone.
"First thing you can do, Ewell, is get your stinkin' carcass off my property. You're leanin' on it an' I can't afford fresh paint for it. Second thing you can do is stay away from my cook or I'll have you up for assault-"
-Link Deas
(pg. 334)
Link really stretches to protect Helen Robinson at this point. She was having troubles when he decided to step in. I think that everybody should have that person. Someone to have their back no matter what and to help them.
